Press Editor and Chief

Ben Johnson

Esteemed Delegates, Fellow Press, and Honorable Guests,

Welcome to TAIMUN XVIII! My name is Ben Johnson, I am a Junior at the American School in Taichung, and I am so excited to announce that I am your Editor in Chief this year.

When choosing a topic for this year’s MUN, suggestions filled the room. But, when the idea to portray and celebrate Taiwan’s achievement of being the first country in Asia to legalize male and female same-sex marriage arose, the atmosphere of the room was illuminated with newfound excitement and determination. The theme of LGBTQ+ Rights was chosen shortly after.

All of us are lucky to be growing and developing in an era where we can all see the global changes of the world as more and more rights are being allowed to different groups of individuals. Using modern technology, we can monitor this social growth throughout the globe and rejoice in society’s willingness to accept new ideas and changes. It is our responsibility to make our dreams a reality and to allow everyone to be equal regardless of age, gender, race, or sexual orientation. And, to always correct others of misconceptions on this issue and to always “strive to thrive.”

I am deeply excited to meet new people and share the team’s ideas for this year’s issue. I am looking forward to the chasing down of chair reports, articles, photos, and greetings in desperation to put together the best possible MUN there could be. With my professional colleagues by my side, I know that TAIMUN XVIII will be a one of a kind experience for anyone who chooses to attend or view this event. With that in mind, I hope to meet new people, share ideas, and have the best possible MUN we could hope for!

Editor in Chief

Taiwan Model United Nations, 18th Session

Hello and welcome to TAIMUN XVIII!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your Deputy Editor in Chief this year. I am currently a junior at American School in Taichung.

First off, I want to express how excited I am to be part of the Press Team executives this year. TAIMUN is a great opportunity to communicate and connect with others in multiple ways and to make friends from diverse backgrounds. This collaborative project exposes us to people with various talents in layout design, article writing, and photo-taking skills in the same room. It is also a wonderful experience to build new relationships with others and strengthen old relationships.

Through careful selection and consideration, this year’s theme, LGBTQ rights, is a unique turn for TAIMUN because it is a controversial topic that has many social and political aspects. We live in an era where mass media is a vital source of communication around the world, which relies on journalism to transmit information to different parts of the globe. Whether it’s online news, op-eds, or reviews, people gain valuable information and stay connected to world issues. In this year’s program book, we seek to create entertaining, informative, and insightful articles for participants in TAIMUN to enjoy. Through hard work and dedication, we hope to bring you a reliable synopsis of the topics of each committee.

Finally, I want to thank my editor in chief and each of the press team members for putting a great effort into making the TAIMUN booklets interesting and fun to read. The issue of LGBTQ rights can be better understood through this year’s conference and we hope you have a great time in TAIMUN XVIII!

Ricky Park

Hey! My name is Ricky Park! This year, I will be working as the head of TAIMUN’s video team. Studying in AST, I have participated in TAIMUN conferences for 4 years, taking the role of a secretary, a delegate, an admin, and a chair, so that I can get a full insight of how a model UN conference is structured and prepared. MUN, especially TAIMUN, has been a significant portion of my life, and I hope that through the videos we will be presenting to you, you can feel the same excitement.

Videos made during the conference serve many roles of introduction, advertisement, and entertainment - most importantly, they serve the grand purpose of setting up the atmosphere. Films have the ability to send a message directly and indirectly, and emotionally impact us if done right. We hope that, through our productions, we will deliver this experience fully, and we hope that it can be extended further throughout the conference. Additionally, we hope to incorporate this year’s topic for TAIMUN, the LGBTQ+ rights, into our video to help set up the suiting atmosphere for the upcoming conference.

So, please entertain yourself at this conference that my colleagues and I have been working on! See you in AST!
